Titular title

A Titular title is a title that does not have any de jure vassals associated with it. The game uses titular titles to represent rulers considered higher in status than counts, but who did not govern territories corresponding to a de jure territory. For example, in 867, Great Moravia is a titular kingdom, while most of the pagan Slavic and Baltic tribes are titular duchies.

Titular kingdoms and empires may assimilate de jure duchies or kingdoms, respectively, into their realms, and upon doing so cease being titular. Alternatively, de jure kingdoms can lose all their de jure duchies via de jure drift, and can become titular kingdoms. For example, in 867, the Kingdoms of Asturias and León have one de jure duchy each, but in 1066, León has assimilated the Duchy of Asturias and the Kingdom of Asturias has become titular.

Certain titular kingdoms (and one titular empire, the Latin Empire) may be formed by a character who holds the required territories and/or meets certain, often religious, requirements. Other titular kingdoms exist in historical starts but cannot be created during the game.

Tribal titles are similar to titular titles. The two differences are that they cannot assimilate any de jure titles, and they are destroyed when another title of the same rank is gained. Most tribal titles are duchy-tier. Many Slavic, Finnish, and Baltic characters start out with a tribal title, but they cannot be created.

Some titular titles can exist without the holder having any land. This includes revolts, adventurer hosts, religious heads (except the caliphates), holy orders, mercenary companies, and the Mongol horde empires. Revolts and hosts are destroyed when their war ends, but the others continue whether they have any land or not; the only way they can be destroyed is due to lack of heirs, which never happens for those (like the Papacy) that use Open Elective succession. Without land, they are listed as "residing" in a county, e.g. a deposed Pope is usually "Residing in Rome".
